- Bezeichnung: Unten in Bleistift bezeichnet mit “Todtensee b. Grimselpaß 1/8 71 | Alpenreise Sommer 71 | Kl. Siddelhorn”. Verso befindet sich eine schematische Skizze eines Gebirgstals in den Alpen mit unkenntlicher Bezeichnung und einer Datierung auf “1/8 71”.
Das Blatt stammt aus einem anonymen Sammelalbum, das insbesondere Bleistiftzeichnungen von Architektur und Landschaft in Deutschland, vor allem im Schwarzwald und am Oberrhein, sowie in Italien beinhaltet, die größtenteils in die frühe zweite Hälfte des 19. Jahrhunderts datiert sind. Der unbekannte Künstler weist zudem eine gewisse Affinität für Eisenbahnromantik und Ingenieurbauten auf, sodass in diesem Umfeld vielleicht die berufliche Tätigkeit des Zeichners zu suchen ist.

- Beschreibung: Unbewegt und still liegt der große Totensee inmitten der schroff aufragenden Berner Alpen, die der anonyme Künstler auf einer Alpenreise, vermutlich mit dem Ziel Italien aus Richtung Deutschland kommend, im Sommer 1871 in Bleistift festgehalten hat. Als Ausschnitt aus der beeindruckenden Landschaft besticht die Zeichnung durch die scharfen Umrisse des flächigen Sees im Bildzentrum und die zum Blattrand hin abnehmende Präzision der Strichführung.

- Inscription: Inscribed in pencil at the bottom “Todtensee b. Grimselpaß 1/8 71 | Alpenreise Sommer 71 | Kl. Siddelhorn”. On the verso is a schematic sketch of a mountain valley in the Alps with an unrecognisable inscription and a date of “1/8 71”.
The sheet comes from an anonymous scrapbook containing in particular pencil drawings of architecture and landscape in Germany, especially in the Black Forest and on the Upper Rhine, as well as in Italy, most of which are dated to the early second half of the 19th century. The unknown artist also shows a certain affinity for railway romanticism and engineering constructions, so that the draughtsman’s professional activity is perhaps to be sought in this environment.

- Description: Immobile and still, the large Totensee lies in the midst of the craggy Bernese Alps, which the anonymous artist captured in pencil on a journey through the Alps, presumably heading for Italy from Germany, in the summer of 1871. As a detail of the impressive landscape, the drawing is captivating because of the sharp outlines of the two-dimensional lake in the centre of the picture and the precision of the line work, which decreases towards the edge of the sheet.
