Gmelin siedelte 1786 zur Weiterbildung nach Rom über und folgte bald einer Einladung Jakob Philipp Hackerts nach Neapel. Aus Anlass des 250. Geburtstags des Künstlers veranstaltete das Kunstmuseum Hohenkarpfen 2010 die Ausstellung „Wilhelm Friedrich Gmelin – Veduten und Ideallandschaften der Goethezeit“.

Gmelin moved to Rome in 1786 for further training and soon followed an invitation by Jakob Philipp Hackert to Naples. To mark the 250th anniversary of the artist’s birth, the Hohenkarpfen Art Museum organised the exhibition “Wilhelm Friedrich Gmelin – Vedute und Ideallandschaften der Goethezeit” in 2010.
