English Version:

Christian Friedrich Stölzel (1751 Dresden – 1816 ibid.) after Johann Eleazar Schenau (1737 Großschönau – 1806 Dresden), Buchillustration, 1795, Etching

  • Technique: Etching on Paper
  • Date: 1795
  • Description: Signed and dated below the image, on the left: “Schenau del.”, on the right: “C.F. Stoelzel sc. 1795”. Christian Friedrich Stölzel was a pupil of Gius Canale at the Dresden Academy between 1765 and 1771, from 1777 a member there; from 1779 teacher of copper engraving and court copper engraver; from 1791 active in book illustration, especially after Johann Eleazar Schenau and Johann David Schubert.
The German painter and director Johann Eleazar Schenau, actually Johann Eleazar Zeissig, was director and professor of genre and portrait painting at the Dresden Art Academy and already attended the Dresden Drawing School at the age of 12, where a pupil of Anton Raphael Meng had placed him and where he was trained by Charles-Francois de Silvestre – the son of the director of the Dresden Drawing School. He was among the most respected genre painters in Paris.
LITERATURE: Fröhlich-Schauseil, Anke (2018): Schenau (1737-1806). Monograph and catalogue raisonné of the paintings, hand drawings and prints by Johann Eleazar Zeißig, gen. Schenau. Petersberg.
