Papst Leo XIII. ist als politischer Papst in die Geschichte eingegangen. Die von vielen gefürchtete Dogmenhäufung nach der Unfehlbarkeitserklärung aus dem Jahre 1870 unter Papst Pius IX. blieb aus. Wohl aber kann man Leo XIII. den ersten Enzyklikenpapst nennen; er verfasste 86 dieser päpstlichen Rundschreiben (deren erstes auf Benedikt XIV. zurückgeht), darunter sieben zur Marienverehrung. Sein Ziel war es, die Kirche aus ihrer selbstgewählten Isolation gegenüber den neuzeitlichen gesellschaftlichen und politischen Entwicklungen herauszuführen, jedoch war er von der Notwendigkeit einer „zeitlichen Macht“ (Kirchenstaat) des Papstes überzeugt. Einerseits orientierte er sich an der hochmittelalterlichen Ordnung von Kirche und Staat, andererseits verfasste er die erste Sozialenzyklika der römisch-katholischen Kirche und wertete damit die katholische Soziallehre auf. Wegen seiner Anteilnahme an sozialen Fragen wurde er mit dem Attribut „Arbeiterpapst“ und dem Beinamen „der Soziale“ bekannt.

Pope Leo XIII went down in history as a political pope. The accumulation of dogmas after the Declaration of Infallibility of 1870 under Pope Pius IX, feared by many, did not occur. However, Leo XIII can be called the first encyclical pope; he wrote 86 of these papal circulars (the first of which goes back to Benedict XIV), including seven on the veneration of Mary. His aim was to lead the Church out of its self-imposed isolation vis-à-vis modern social and political developments, but he was convinced of the necessity of a “temporal power” (Papal State) of the Pope. On the one hand, he oriented himself to the high medieval order of church and state, on the other hand, he wrote the first social encyclical of the Roman Catholic Church and thus upgraded Catholic social teaching. Because of his concern for social issues, he became known with the attribute “Worker Pope” and the epithet “the Social”.
