Als Soldat unter dem Befehl des Königs tat er sich besonders in den Religionskriegen hervor. Auf seine militärische Laufbahn verweist in der Darstellung die Rüstung des Porträtierten.

Breast portrait in three-quarter view of the Duke of Lesdiguières and Count of Pont-de-Veyle as well as Marshal of France, Francois de Bonne. As a soldier under the command of the King, he distinguished himself particularly in the Wars of Religion. The sitter’s armour is a reference to his military career.
